Element 1
Strategic planning to establish and develop aspects of extended services to meet the needs of children and young people
In establishing extended activities and services, providers must consider how best to develop, manage and improve these to meet all identified needs.
Strategic planning means the overall approach to be followed to achieve planned outcomes, with an underlying clear purpose and direction. The strategy will make clear the key roles in management and development, and how responsibility will be shared. It should also encapsulate the centre’s/service’s vision, mission or common purpose.
There will be processes and procedures to measure and support the development of such aspects as efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. These will relate to the provider’s service delivery planning or business planning (as appropriate to its context), and should demonstrate a clear return on a very broad interpretation of ‘investment’ across a range of aspects.
Strategic planning should be embedded in the provider’s development planning.
Delivery planning will make clear how different aspects of the strategy, such as activities, monitoring, review and evaluation of impact, are to be carried out in practice. All planning should be based on a careful analysis of the provision’s current strengths and areas for development, and of the children and young people’s needs, alongside a broader understanding and analysis of wider community needs.
