Element 5

Regular review of the progress made by all young children

All young children should have their development and progress reviewed and recorded regularly. This information should be used to inform future planning of their learning.

Progress records should include details of any knowledge and skills acquired since the previous review. They will include judgements formed by practitioners through their knowledge of the child in the setting, but might also record and reflect verbal information shared by parents of any new developments or achievements they have noted at home.

The outcome of any review should be shared with parents, relevant practitioners and the child, as appropriate to their age and stage of development. Where appropriate, they should also be shared with other professionals in health or social care or other agencies.
